Over the course of this past semester, Ezra, Silas and I have successfully gotten bins placed in our school so that people can easily recycle their bottles and cans. We are in charge of cleaning the bottles and cans so that our school's maintenance staff can take them in to be recycled once a week. We struggled with getting the word out, but we are making progress. At least, now people are aware of the bins around the school and have taken advantage of them. I've learned that I (as a junior in high school) am capable of doing simple things in my school which can contribute to great change in the world. Hopefully after I have graduated, people will continue to promote Bins for Tins in our school, and will take care of bins and bottles like Ezra, Silas and I have.

This past week, Silas called Ms. Green Recycling about bringing in our school's recyclables. We plan on taking in our school’s recyclables every 1-2 weeks. The reason for this decision to bring it in ourselves is simply because we would have to pay them around $30 per month for them to pick it up. Today, we are going to talk to our school's janitorial staff about where we can place bins for people to recycle in our school.
As of the past few weeks, Ezra, Silas and I have worked on a video promoting our website and our mission. Check it out at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5-KlDT8S39Y
Now we are moving our efforts into our local/community recycling scene. Currently, our school only recycles paper. With our efforts, we hope to add aluminum, tin, cardboard, glass, and plastic to our school’s recycling output. My advice to you would be to talk to your school’s facilities management or janitorial staff to see what locations in your school would be the most appropriate for your bins. Also, see if they can help you take care of the recycling. Or, rather, see if your school currently has a recycling company that it works with. If so, see if they accept the materials you want to recycle. A 20% Time project is a school project in which students spend a fifth of their school week (20%) focusing their resources on a particular problem, or something they are passionate about. Every Friday, I am going to invest my time into my school community’s recycling effort. I am passionate about recycling because it improves the general health of the earth, and it helps conserve resources which would otherwise go to waste.
I am passionate about recycling because it is a clean habit which relates closely to my way of living. I prefer a tidy work place, and I like to think I have good hygiene. As stewards of God’s creation, we are all responsible with the health of our world. Through this project, we hope to encourage recycling on a daily basis. We want to make simple, easy to find recycling stations in our school in order to decrease the times people would usually place recyclables in the trash. |
